The Ancient Games were held at Olympia, Greece, beginning in the year 776 BC. As is true for Modern Games, there was a period of four years between each presentation of the Games, which is known as Olympiad. The Centennial Olympic Games will represent the 26th Olympiad through a century.
The first Olympic event of record during the Ancient Games was a race called 'the stade', which was a distance of about 600 feet. In later years more events were added, including wrestling, the pentathlon and boxing. A competition called 'pankration', a combination of wrestling and boxing was introduced in 648 BC.
