The wooden city of Denver, Colorado was plagued by fires throughout the 1860s and 1870s. A single fire destroyed 70% of the city's leading businesses. During this time, Woody Baker Hose Co. and other volunteer provided fire protection for the city but their protection was proving to be inadequate. So, the public demanded a paid fire department and Denver's first motorized fire apparatus was delivered in 1909.
